Plasmodium chabaudi is one of the four malaria species that infect rodents. P. chabaudi infects murine rodents from Central Africa, and are also infectious to laboratory rodents and easily maintained by Anopheles stephensi in the laboratory. It serves as a good model for the human parasites with which it shares many similarities in essential aspects of structure, biochemistry and life cycle.

The 18.8 Mb genome of P. chabaudi, with a karyotype of 14 chromosomes, is being sequenced at The Sanger Center, as a complementary effort to the ongoing malaria genome sequencing project. Annotation of the P. chabaudi AS genome is provided by GeneDB where the latest sequence dataand annotation is constantly updated.
