Gram-negative nitrogen-fixing bacteria living in soil and able to establish a symbiosis with host plants from the genera Medicago, Melilotus and Trigonella leading to the formation of nodules on roots. Its genome contains three replicons, a chromosome and two plasmids. Strain 1021 is a commonly used laboratory strain.

Strain Sm1021 is closely related to another sequenced bacterium Sm2011 (SUNM2). Both strains are independent spontaneous streptomycin-resistant derivatives of the parental SU47 strain. Despite their derivation from a single parental strain, a number of phenotypic differences have been reported between them (adapted from PMID 23599422).
