This protozoan parasite is the causal agent of human trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection. Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan parasite that is the causal agent of human trichomoniasis. It is typically transmitted by sexual intercourse and accounts for approximately 170 million cases per year worldwide. It is an extracellular parasite that adheres to the epithelium of the urogenital tract of both men and women and is responsible for urethritis and prostatitis or vaginitis, respectively. T. vaginalis is anaerobic and therefore it does not contain mitochondria in its cytoplasm. Instead, it possesses specialized granule-like organelles called the hydrogenosomes which are involved in the parasite's carbohydrate metabolism.

The T. vaginalis genome was found to be approximately 160 Mb in size.
